Two Proven Ways to Protect Your Shoreline

The right choice depends on your wave exposure, your access and how you want to use your beach. Here's how the two options compare.

Signs you need protection:

  • ✓Your bluff or bank is slumping or undercut
  • ✓Your yard is losing ground every storm
  • ✓Old riprap has sunk or scattered
  • ✓Ice push is damaging the shoreline
  • ✓You want to be ready for the next high-water cycle

How it works

Our Shoreline Erosion Control Process

  1. 1

    Site visit

We look at wave exposure, access, soils and how you use the shoreline.

  2. 2

    Options & budget

A clear recommendation, a revetment, Shore Savers™ or a seawall, with costs.

  3. 3

    Drawings & permits

Joint Permit Application, plus critical dune or soil erosion permits where they apply.

  4. 4

    Build

Toe first, then layered stone or linked modules, built exactly to the drawings.

  5. 5

    Proof

Weigh slips and photos so you know what was installed.

Revetment or Shore Savers™?

Rock Revetment

Strengths

  • +Large cover stone absorbs and dissipates wave energy
  • +Holds up well against ice
  • +Ideal for harbors, piers and heavy-weather sites

Watch-outs

  • !The toe must be built in 3–4 ft of water, which takes time
  • !Big stone has to come in by barge, along the beach or across your property
  • !Undersized or soft stone, or no toe, leads to sinking and washouts
  • !A large rock pile can make it hard to get down to the water

Shore Savers™

Strengths

  • +8′ × 8′ reinforced concrete modules, 8″ thick, linked into one mat
  • +About 78 lb/ft² ground pressure, less than a footprint
  • +Edge modules pivot down to control scour
  • +Ramped top absorbs waves and deflects ice
  • +Can be covered and replanted when water drops, and removed if needed

Watch-outs

  • !Permit acceptance varies by agency and state. We'll tell you up front whether it's an option for your site.

Questions to ask any revetment contractor

  • ☐Will the toe be built exactly as the permit drawings show?
  • ☐How many tons of stone per linear foot, and what stone type?
  • ☐Will you provide weigh slips for delivered stone?
  • ☐Will you photograph each stage of construction?
  • ☐How will equipment and stone reach the shoreline?

By the Numbers

10–12 tons

of rock per linear foot on typical permit drawings

3–4 ft

of water depth for proper toe work

78 lb/ft²

Shore Savers™ ground pressure

8′ × 8′

Shore Savers™ module size, expands in 8′ steps

Shoreline Erosion Control FAQ

Rock revetment or seawall: which is better?

Revetments absorb wave energy and suit high-energy open shoreline. Seawalls give a firm, usable edge and suit inland lakes and protected waters. We'll recommend what fits your site.

Is low water a good time for shoreline work?

Yes. With Great Lakes levels below average, it's easier to repair or build protection, and you're ready before the next high-water cycle.

What is Shore Savers™?

A patented system of 8 ft × 8 ft reinforced concrete modules linked into a protective mat. It absorbs wave energy, deflects ice and can be covered and replanted when water levels drop. Permit acceptance varies, and we'll tell you if it's an option for you.

Will I still be able to reach the beach?

With a revetment, access can be harder, so we plan paths or steps. Shore Savers™ has a ramped, walkable surface.

What permits are needed?

Usually the EGLE / Army Corps Joint Permit Application, and sometimes critical dune and county soil erosion permits. We handle all of them.
